Singapore has one of the best healthcare systems in the world and thanks to this, we are living much longer lives. In Singapore, women and men can expect to live up to age 86.1 years and 85.1 years respectively. However, this coupled with a lower fertility rate, Singapore is experiencing a drastic demographic shift that sees its population transition from an ageing to an aged one. As ageing is the most common and biggest risk factor for most chronic diseases, will likely see an increase in the prevalence of age-related disease and the healthcare costs that comes with it. This poses potential economic issues due to the decline in the proportion of working-age people that must meet the demand for increased costs of elderly healthcare.
The Centre for Healthy Longevity endeavours to delay ageing and increase the human healthspan, and research undertaken by the centre will transform the way we age and secure a healthier future for our people.
It's the Centre's mission to delay ageing, increase human healthspan, and maintain functionality and resilience. This is accomplished using a two-pronged approach where leading scientists conduct fundamental research which delineates the mechanistic pathways of ageing and is translated to human clinical studies to promote healthy longevity throughout the life course.
