The Centre for Functional Movement and Enabling Technologies (CFMET) addresses individual, societal and population health needs in functional mobility.
This encompasses crucial physiological abilities to move and navigate optimally in a variety of environments in order to accomplish functional activities or tasks, and to participate successfully in activities of daily living (ADLs) at home, at work and in the community.
Functional mobility is increasingly being used in research studies and practical projects as a global and ecological outcome of patients' health status. It includes (but is not limited to) movements like standing, bending, walking and climbing, which are the building blocks of ADLs, and hence crucial to an individual’s independent living and global health status.
Impaired functional mobility has been found to be associated with greater risk of falls, loss of independence, and institutionalisation.
